Environmental Awareness
at the Golden Eagle Resort

At the Golden Eagle Resort we pride ourselves on being responsible caretakers of our environment, and responsible citizens. Our operational philosophy is to do whatever we can to run an environmentally responsible business. Together we can all make a difference!

Below are examples of our of our initiatives.

Land Preservation

NWF Backyard Wildlife Habitat

The Golden Eagle has their very own nature preserve. Of our 80 acres of land, over 50 are designated for preservation. We also border the Town of Stowe Forest. This beautiful area is a haven for wildlife, and offers our guests a unique venue for hiking, snowshoeing and wildlife observation (see trail map).
Our grounds around the resort are also planted and managed with an eye toward attracting wildlife, and we have been certified as a "Backyard Wildlife Habitat" by the National Wildlife Federation. On occasion our ponds and grounds have been home to Great Blue Herons, ducks, deer, woodchucks, and the occasional wandering moose.

Recycling and Waste Reduction

We are committed to doing as much as we can to reduce the waste stream. This past summer we installed new "recycling centers" around the property to make it easier for our guests to recycle, and purchased a shed to facilitate the collection of recycling.

In the rooms we are proud participants in the "Project Planet" program for reducing the unnecessary use of laundry detergents and excess water at the Golden Eagle. Historically hotels have replaced towels daily for their guests, but we believe that we can work together to provide choices as to whether it is necessary to do so. We calculate that we can save up to 5,000 gallons of water, and over 25 gallons of detergents monthly when guests are willing to re-use their towels for multiple days.

We also use "Guest Solutions" soap, lotion and shampoo products in refillable bulk dispensers to reduce waste of both unused products, and literally tons of plastic packaging that is used in more traditional individually packaged hotel products.

Energy Conservation

During the summer months, our housekeeping department uses our electric GEM Car to reduce gasoline usage as we tour the property inspecting rooms before you check in!

Most of the lighting around the property is now done with compact flourescent bulbs.

Did you know that incandescent lamps give off 90% of their energy as heat? This is not only an inefficient way of producing light, but also increases the building's cooling load!

Dining

Vermont Fresh Network

We make every effort to use local suppliers and farmers in the Colonial Cafe, and we are a member of the "Vermont Fresh Network" that promotes the use of local Vermont products. Some of the local businesses that we are proud to support include Mansfield Dairy, Cabot Coop Creamery, Thompson Bakery, Adams Poultry, Nutty Stef's Granola and Sugarwood Farms.
